Les Misérables can be translated from the French into "The Miserable Ones", "The Wretched", "The Poor Ones", "The Wretched Poor" or "The Victims". So, as you will have concluded, this is not a happy book. In fact, it is the very opposite of fluffy happiness. It is a story about the lowest and darkest parts of French society in the first half of the nineteenth century. Hugo takes the reader on a 1200+ page journey around France and into the lives of criminals, prostitutes, those wasting away under.. Let's say that I could choose a single book with the guarantee that every man, woman, and child would read it. I would not choose my top three favorites, nor would I choose the one whose remnants are permanently inked upon me. I would choose this one. You argue, the length! The time period! The cultural barriers! It's just another long expounding by some old dead white guy whose type has suffocated literature for centuries! Women will be frustrated with poor representation, people who aren't.. I'm in the minority unfortunately. I thought the book was okay. Next, a question: Why have I been so drawn lately to these 1, 500 page 19th century behemoths? War and Peace, The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, and now this. The descriptions of the moral complexities a man is faced with are spectacular and Jean Valjean's internal struggles are always a wonder.. I put off tackling this novel for more years than I can remember. This was mostly because I wanted to read it in French and the length of the book daunted me somewhat. That, and the fact that every time I was in the local foreign language bookstore they didn’t seem to have all of the volumes. The fact that I was relying on a local bookstore rather than the Internet to obtain a book in French indicates how many years it’s been since I gave reading the novel any serious thought. The film touches subjects which although very important, remain out of focus in almost all contemporary narratives. As the title «Les miserables» indicates, the protagonists are the victims of a system which breeds inequality and marginalization of a large proportion of the population. The story develops linearly, the scenes stay within the essential statements, spectacularly false impressions are omitted and the message comes through effectively. My feeling was that there was really no plot but an ordinary, documentary like, day to day happening in one of the ghettos of civilized Paris in France. What I found very interesting and revealing was the depiction of the inability of western societies to assimilate, integrate and absorb different cultures. I was left wondering.

I love this rendition of the song and I love how Eddie portrayed Marius. When he remembers his friends and he smiles, you can see how sad and broken he is. I love how he almost whispers some words, as if it was too painful to say them out loud. Oh my friends, my friends, forgive me that I live and you are gone this line breaks my heart every single time. His voice cracks from the pain, he's overwhelmed by guilt. He looks around the room, incredulous, he's only starting to realise he will never see those faces full of life and hope again, the flames in their eyes and the fire in their hearts are out. Don't ask me what your sacrifice was for he will never stop asking himself it it was really worth it; he will always feel undeserving of outliving Eponine, Enjolras, Grantaire, Gavroche and the others. And he's horrified. How can he live with that? It's a heavy burden. This scene feels so real. Hats off to everyone involved in its making, especially Eddie. I can't put into words how wonderful this is. Yes, it's different from the stage version, and thank god it is. Only cinema could allow this level of intimacy and vulnerability.

LES MISERABLES - Primé au Festival de Cannes, sélectionné aux Oscars, Les Misérables de Ladj Ly est sorti au cinéma ce mercredi. Avec ce film engagé et social, le réalisateur a voulu alerter sur la tension dans les banlieues françaises et pointe du doigt les politiques. [Mis à jour le 14 janvier 2020 à 11h18] Après avoir bouleversé la Croisette, "Les Misérables" s'apprête à bousculer le public. Reparti du dernier Festival de Cannes avec le Prix du Jury, le film de Ladj Ly a depuis été sélectionné pour représenter la France aux Oscars. Le mercredi 20 novembre, le public a enfin pu découvrir ce drame social, véritable "cri d'alarme" sur la France de 2019 et les tensions en banlieue. Malgré ce titre clin d’œil à l'oeuvre de Victor Hugo, ce n'est pourtant pas une énième adaptation des malheurs de Gavroche et Cosette que propose le cinéaste Ladj Ly ( A voix haute, 365 jours à Clichy Montfermeil). Dans "Les Misérables", le public suit Stéphane, fraîchement arrivé de Cherbourg pour rejoindre la Brigade anti-criminalité (Bac) de Montfermeil. En compagnie de ses deux co-équipiers, il découvre la cité des Bosquets et les tensions qui règnent dans le quartier. Jusqu'à ce qu'une interpellation filmée par un drone tourne mal. Avec "Les Misérables", c'est un "cri d'alarme" qu'a souhaité pousser Ladj Ly. Les scènes tournées sont inspirées de moments qu'il a lui-même vécus, assumant totalement l'engagement qui se dégage de son film. "C'est un cri d'alarme, c'est un constat d'échec, c'est aussi une réalité. Comme je l'ai dit, tout est inspiré de faits réels. Cette scène à la fin du film, je l'ai vécue en vrai. Malheureusement ce sont des choses qui arrivent: quand il y a un problème, quand les gens sont dans une souffrance, à un moment donné ils craquent", nous a confié le cinéaste. Ce dernier précise toutefois: "Les Misérables n'est pas un film anti-policier" et refuse de prendre parti ni pour eux, ni pour les habitants du quartier. "Les Misérables, c'est tout le monde, nous explique-t-il en interview. Les habitants, mais les policiers aussi. On se met à leur place, ils travaillent dans des conditions très dures, avec des salaires très bas, et vivent eux aussi dans les cités". Si "Les Misérables" suit principalement les trois policiers de la Brigade Anti-Criminalité, Ladj Ly a également développé une réflexion sur l'enfance dans les cités: "On a voulu poser beaucoup de question: qu'est-ce qu'être un enfant et grandir sur ces territoires? Quel est leur avenir? énumère Ladj Ly. Malheureusement ils sont de plus en plus jeunes à être livrés à eux-mêmes, dehors. Ce sont les premières victimes de ce système, de cette société... J'estime que les premiers responsables sont les politiques qui ont laissé cette situation pourrir depuis 30-40 ans, et ça continue de perdurer. A un moment donné, soit il y a une réelle volonté politique d'arranger les choses, soit... il ne faut pas s'étonner si la révolution arrive". Un avertissement qu'Emmanuel Macron aurait entendu, selon le JDD: après avoir visionné le long-métrage, le président de la République s'est dit "bouleversé" et a demandé au gouvernement de "se dépêcher de trouver des idées et d'agir pour améliorer les conditions de vie dans les quartiers", rapporte l'hebdomadaire. Les Misérables: pourquoi ce titre? Contrairement à ce que le titre peut laisser penser, "Les Misérables" n'est pas une énième adaptation du roman de Victor Hugo. Pourtant, tout comme dans le long-métrage de Ladj Ly, les personnages de l'oeuvre littéraire évoluent à Montfermeil. "Aujourd'hui encore, on a la maison des Thénardiers, la fontaine de Jean Valjean… énumère Ladj Ly lorsqu'on l'interroge sur ce titre. Depuis gamin on est lié à cette histoire et il se trouve que la misère est toujours présente un siècle et demi plus tard sur ce même territoire. Ça faisait sens, et c'est avant tout un clin d'œil". Les Misérables: trois acteurs dans la peau de policiers Pour rentrer dans la peau des policiers, le trio d'acteur des Misérables a effectué un long travail de préparation. Damien Bonnard, qui incarne Stéphane dit "Pento", nous a confié s'être beaucoup documenté pour les besoins de ce rôle complexe: "j'ai vraiment pris tout au début: de la formation de policier à la fonction. J'ai regardé tous les documentaires que je pouvais regarder, mais aussi des films d'habitants qui filmaient la police. Je me suis également beaucoup questionné sur la justice, sur ses limites". La rencontre avec de véritables policiers a également été primordiale pour que leurs personnages collent au plus près de la réalité. "J'ai eu la chance de rencontrer des policiers, un en particulier qui m'a beaucoup aidé et avec qui j'ai échangé sur plein de choses", nous a confié Djibril Zonga, qui prête ses traits à Gwada. "On a vraiment cherché à être au plus prêt de la réalité, complète Alexis Manenti (Chris). C'est un film qui parle de vérité. Pour ces rôles précis, se posaient aussi des questions humaines: chacun a des failles, des problèmes, des doutes et fait des erreurs, c'est ce qui devait aussi ressortir de ces personnages". Les trois acteurs des Misérables l'expliquent bien: ce long-métrage interpelle. Pour Damien Bonnard, cette expérience lui a apporté de nombreuses matières de réflexion. "Souvent, les tournages font écho à notre vie, ça répond à des questions qu'on se pose. Ce film m'a rendu plus attentif à beaucoup de questions humaines". Le comédien confie d'ailleurs que c'est sa rencontre avec le réalisateur qui l'a convaincu de rejoindre le court-métrage, puis le long-métrage. "Et au-delà de ma partition, c'est toute la réflexion sur la justice, les enfants, l'abandon,... qui m'intéressait dans ce projet". Car en plus d'être un film sur la banlieue, Les Misérables est un film qui représente la France de 2019. "Même quand on présente le long-métrage à l'étranger, on nous dit que ça représente bien le territoire français", explique Alexis Manenti, avant d'être coupé par Djibril Zonga: "le public se dit que ça représente un côté de la France qu'ils ne connaissent pas". Dans Les Misérables, en plus de la justesse de ses prises de vue et de la tension qui monte de séquence en séquence, Ladj Ly évite les écueils du "film de banlieue" pour la raconter dans sa plus juste vérité, sans prendre parti ni pour les habitants, ni pour les policiers que suit le public. Le cinéaste vient lui même de Montfermeil, où il a grandi et où il habite toujours. Il y a depuis ouverte une école de cinéma gratuite et fait partie du collectif Kourtrajmé. "Le regard de Ladj Ly a la force du constat brut, sans filtre, d'une situation désespérée et, pire encore, figée", rappelle le média spécialisé Positif. L'Elysée a répondu, invitant l'équipe du film à venir le présenter. Le réalisateur a préféré décliné, invitant le président de la République à le visionner à son école de cinéma, à Montfermeil. Finalement, un DVD a été envoyé à l'Elysée. Emmanuel Macron a bien vu Les Misérables. Selon Le Journal du dimanche, il a même été "bouleversé par la justesse" de ce film dramatique. A tel point que le chef de l'Etat aurait demandé au gouvernement de "se dépêcher de trouver des idées et d'agir pour améliorer les conditions de vie dans les quartiers". Ce lundi 18 novembre, Ladj Ly a réagi à la nouvelle sur le plateau de BFM TV: "J'espère que les choses bougeront. Some people acknowledge that this movie is well shot, but complain that it doesn't get the roots of the problem, doesn't point out the culprits, probably the capitalist society and France's colonial past. Neither does it offer much in the way of easy solutions, which would have been completely off the mark. Any of that would have led to a militant movie that would have satisfied a few militants but that would have had much less impact on the rest of the viewers.
People compare this movie to La Haine, which was a landmark in its time; but Les Miserables takes a much wider view, where each participant - even the shadiest - has his own logic (few women in this movie, btw) and reasons for doing what they are doing. It is this humanist outlook that tags it to Victor Hugo, rather than the story that has little to do with the novel of the same name.
The suspense is riveting to the end, all the more that we don't know exactly where the movie is going. There are loads of short appearances by little-known actors that leave you wondering whether they are are actually acting a part or playing their own role. The action scenes are realistic and original.
